I actually love to watch the Tour..........once it enters the Alps and gets nasty. The early stages are rather boring except for the crashes, but once the mountain stages begin the race is quite a spectacle IMHO.
Today saw a couple of "new" American faces step to the forefront. Christian VandeVelde showed us that he is no shrinking violet as he competed with the big boys in this year's tour and came out in great shape heading into the last push to Paris. He has 2 more brutal mountain stages and a time trial to take the lead that he trails be merely 1/2 minute.
As someone who has participated in endurance sports (no The Greek not that) myself I have a tremendous amount of respect for what these men do on a bike. The mountain stages are just incredibly torturous and really separate the men from the boys. Watching these guys riding up a 6-8% grade for mile after mile is just about enough to make me run through a wall. It really gets me pumped and it is as much mental as it is physical. That is the kind of pain that makes your brain tell you to stop with every pedal turn, but these guys just keep on pedalling and IMO it is awesome to watch.
Go VandeVelde, bring another yellow jersey back to a US team.
