Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free time
I am blessed with 2 absolutely beautiful kids. I love them more than anything except my wife of course. They are pure joy.....most of the time, and I definitely love being a parent. However, as all of you parents know well with parenthood comes some sacrifice. Free time is a thing of the past so you have to pick your moments. Running used to be my moment, but I usually take my daugter with me now. If you are a runner and have kids you must get a running stroller....I digress. I had a moment today though.
I left the house, by myself, to go buy my wife a bottle of wine and my son some nasal spray, but it was a moment. I got in the car and I rolled the windows down, opened the sunroof, changed the cd from Laurie Berkner (kids music I would recommend) to a mixed cd that I made recently and just soaked it all in. I turned up the Radiohead and took a deep breath of the post thunderstorm cool air and realized that I never would have appreciated such a moment before I was a parent. It was fantastic. I even talked to the cashiers at the liquor store and the pharmacy.
Then I returned home to a family of smiling faces (thankfully) and looked forward to another moment whenever that might happen.

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeYa, luckily, I'm quite a ways from that (even though I will love to have kids), but I'm sure, since you have a son, you will enjoy the days of going to his sporting events or whatever he does. Speech meets, chess club meets (can you watch those?) or whatever. But this leads to a discussion that has come up alot, maybe you have an opinion on it. The Mercy Rule in high school sports. More specifically, baseball. Do you believe there should be a cap on how much runs a team can score on an opposing score? Example, our baseball game tonight, we won 43-4. In the end, we were trying to get out -bunting every pitch, swinging at balls, and just throwing down the middle of the plate. Should that be stopped from happening?

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeMy daughter was about 3 or 4, I put her down for her nap and was so excited that I was able to finally get some free time and take a nap myself. I woke up to water pouring through the kitchen ceiling. I thought a pipe had busted, until I heard the bath running upstairs. Ran upstairs to find my daughter giving her collectible doll a bath...after stopping up the drain with a towel. Oh yeah, I can appreciate free time....much more so now that she's in college. |

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeYes Mom I have noticed that phenomenon. It's a losing battle and as long as it's not falling out I think I will be ok. Thanks for the comments everyone. Classic story Mom. It's hard to explain what goes on in those little minds. |

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeFree time? God only knows the last time I had any free time or me time. Wait the last time I had free time was last night after I tucked my little raskels in for bed, but shucks by that time its my time to go to sleep. I have 3 beautiful kids and they never let me have any time. They could be finish eating their own food, but they still want mommys food, but you got to love them. They are something special! Great post! |

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeFree time, what's that like? Seriously, I wish that I could spend more time with my kids. I remember once when my youngest one was about 2, we woke up and found out that she had figured out how to take the cabinet latches off, open up a 5 pound sack of corn meal, and pour it all over the kitchen floor. Wasn't that a proud parent day lol. |

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeYes, my free time was all of 10 minutes. I did take the opportunity to walk all of the aisles at the liquor store and the pharmacy. Did you know that Walgreens sells Ben & Jerry's? I just stared for several seconds but was able to restrain. |

Parenthood....Sure makes you appreciate free timeWalkin teh line right now bro...great post! I get my share of free time, I go out and catch bars and rec games, I have a good friend who will watch my daughter any time I need, so it isn't oo much of a problem (especially when myself and the other half want to get a "touch" of free time! But I definetly DO appreciate when I get free time to just me, whether it is my daughter sleeping and her mother is at work or they both drive to the in-laws, I do kind of take it in. To some other posts: NO Mercy Rule, I feel kids need to learn how to overcome losses as well as how to win with the best of them. I don't mention it much, but I am a coach (girl's/boy's HS basketball) and have had teams in the scenario of a blowout. I just swallowed hard, and told the kids to keep running those plays until they got them right, no matter the time OR score. Blowouts are a lot more numbing than close losses, so you can actually get things done or work towards the next lesson right in the midst of the game. Losses I feel (and I've heard this from some conduits other than me) teach my kids more...management, frustration, pacing, etc. I am not a subscriber to the EVERYONE WINS Modern American Sports model. I prefer, you try your hardestand we will ours! |
